IFW designers, more expressive and progressive than ever!

The second edition of INTERNATIONAL Fashion Week AMSTERDAM took place last March, with local and other international designers took pride in presenting their colors, vibrancy, experimentation through fabric and concepts. While other fashion weeks have touched upon various issues of feminism, politics, and identity, IFW seems to be making their own rhythm and rhyme.

The IFW designers are more expressive and progressive than ever, placing a heavy focus on notions of diversity in general and building concepts and identity on their own.

Upcoming and established designers from more than 15 different countries, showcased their collection to the world at the renowned World Fashion Centre in Amsterdam.

We got the chance to adore and witness them firsthand, taking these wonderful designers below as some of our personal favorites throughout the show:

UNDERRATED CO By Marcquise “Q” Anderson USA

UNDERRATED CO By Marcquise “Q” Anderson USA

This season, IFW proved more than ever that we live in an age when you’re just as likely to see streetwear being paraded down the runway as the urban youth is rocking you. It’s a shift that has redefined what streetwear actually is, an instant switch of vivid colors and quirky layering for the suave men and women roaming in the streets.

Founded in LA, two years ago, UNDERRATED CO is the brainchild of Marcquise “Q” Anderson, a brand about art and positivity, a blend of contemporary culture and fashion on the runway!

UNDERRATED CO came about by being underestimated, undervalued, minimized in life, and being told you aren’t good enough. Instead of harboring on those negative thoughts, Marquise used it to fuel himself to prove all those people wrong. By doing so, he created not just a brand, but a LIFESTYLE. A Lifestyle to create platforms and opportunities for those who have gone through the same challenges in life.

The fusion of cultural trends and mainstays is a harmonious blend to turn heads and hearts. The concept and overall vision of this lifestyle brand are to bring unity amongst all cultures, ages, and races while bringing a custom, one of one piece to the fashion scene. When you have that custom piece from UNDERRATED CO, you are the only one with it.

WACHMA COUTURE By Issam Balalioui MOROCCO

Issam Balaloui, designer of Wachma Couture, is lauded as one of the most prominent designers in Morocco, and his influence is beginning to cross borders as well. Issam’s residence was split between the United States and Morocco. Thus, a manifold of cultural inspirations informs his designs. Issam showcased his SS19 collection at the International Fashion Week, Amsterdam. The collection consists of modern, androgynous pieces with punk oddities and Moroccan flairs. For example, the collection featured a refined, asymmetrical blazer dress with thin black and red stripes and beaded necklaces, an ode to the Moroccan aesthetic. The intermingling between colorful Moroccan-inspired jewelry and sophisticated suit tailoring is representative of the duality Issam experienced growing up.

MULTIBAGS By Olina Francová & Jitka Arazimova CZECH REPUBLIC

MULTIBAGS By Olina Francová & Jitka Arazimova CZECH REPUBLIC

Olina Francová and Jitka Arazimova, a sculptor and a graphic artist, have been friends since they’ve studied at the Secondary Arts School. Seven years ago, they joined forces under a new brand, Multibags, to design and sew handmade leather handbags. Creating design in moments when majority of creators say that nothing new can be done completely
enchanted them. Nowadays, their work can be easily recognizable even by those who do not care about fashion. Exploring the design possibilities of objects that were created to carry things has brought up the issue of multi-functionality as well as creations for the physically challenged. The common credo of both authors is that good design enriches life and connects people who share the same sentiment. And it doesn’t matter whether you are twenty or a hundred!

JOSH By Joshua Bartfeld Birchjones UK

JOSH By Joshua Bartfeld Birchjones UK

On the IFW Amsterdam runway this season, 8 designs paraded in front of an audience eager to see the work of an up-and-coming star in the world of fashion.

Many designers begin sketching up clothes for women at a young age, but not many have created and hand-crafted full collection at the age of 12.

Josh Birchjones proves budding creative talent is immune to age. Ever since he was old enough to hold a pencil and doodle, Joshua always drew women’s clothes, his inspiration came from his mothers’ wardrobe and from all her gorgeous dresses.

Over the years he has drawn and designed women’s clothes, especially very glamorous ones. He has sketch pads filled to the brim with designs. Whilst doing that, looking at women’s fashion and listening to what his mum was always moaning about, he stumbled across a gap in the marketplace, this is where his day-to-night capsule collection was created. His ultimate passion is
evening wear and couture gowns and his second collection ‘sweet dreams’ was designed and showcased in Amsterdam. He is now working on his third and ultimate collection ‘moonlight’ Which is to be shown exclusively in September this year.
